I completed the Diploma in Illustrative Photography at Photography Studies College in South Melbourne in the 1990s and began working as a portrait and fashion Photographer.  However the murder of my brother George Karalis in 1998 not only veered me off my photographic path but my well being. After more than a decade of not being able to pick up my cameras and battling with mental illness the world seemed to open up again as digital technology became accessible.

In 2013 I became intrigued with the mobile phone as camera and began a series in street photography going on to create a body of work called ‘Postcard’ which also developed into several photo books, one of which is called Memory and is dedicated to my brother. In exploring street photography in the city of Melbourne and self assigning projects on Instagram, I came across the Greek Australian Cultural League and in 2016 began volunteering in the not for profit organisation. In 2017 I curated the 7th Antipodean Palette Exhibition where I launched ‘Postcard’.

I’ve always been interested in art in all its forms and so I attended a number of art workshops in 2016, in Melbourne and New York. The question on my mind was ‘Could attending workshops in all different mediums create a cohesive body of work?’.  Linocut, abstract painting, collage, glass art, sculpture and even creative writing were some of the mediums I explored. The main subject matter in this work was the hot air balloon.

The unsolved murder of my brother continues to haunt me and in so doing it informs my work. My latest work in progress ‘Not Forgotten’ on Yupo paper began as an expression in colour and texture.  I’m excited to see where this work leads me.
