The Fisherman

Description : While fisherman often consider them a nuisance for harassing and occasionally stealing a catch, I am quite fond of cormorants. They are marvellous fisherman themselves and I love their neat feathering, the depth of tone and colour in the plumage and their graceful movement in the water.
I’m sure cormorants are not everyone’s first choice for a subject in a painting as they are not the most cute and fluffy, iconic bird. From a commercial perspective, it might be a painting that is hard to find a home for, for this reason. However, I do find them an interesting subject and on this occasion something about this image appealed to me. I liked the idea of the the calm motion, abstract qualities of the water, the distorted reflections and the limited colour pallet with the only prominent colour being on the bird’s head.
