Reef Stalker

Description : “Reef Stalker” Grey morph pacific reef heron (Egretta sacra), Watercolour on Arches paper (approximately 65 x 50 cm).
Reef herons are common on the beaches of Northern Australia. This one was in Far North Queensland and was stalking the rock pools at low tide. There was a white morph nearby hunting in the shallow sand flats.
They are terrific to watch as they hunt the rock pools. They move around scoping out the pools until they home in on a target, then the stalking begins. If the stalking is successful, they will spear their beak towards the target, usually a crab or small fish, and if that goes well, they get a meal.
