Based in Melbourne, Australia Veena Merchant is a visual artist working with a range of mediums and techniques. Her works combine abstract, geometric and natural forms to create richly coloured compositions. Informed by both her Indian heritage and by many decades studying the art of the sub-continent, her painting reveals a wealth of personal experience and creative insights.
Veena’s recent exploration of watercolour on ‘yupo’ paper has enabled the development of a range of techniques that are distinct to her practice. Her technical facility adds to the unique qualities of her art and the clarity of colours.
As an abstract artist, I often begin my work without a preconceived idea, but with just a feeling and a mood – feelings that often precipitate into colours. While initially the work is process oriented, soon spontaneity takes over with the discovery of images and shapes that touch the hidden corners of my mind, evoking memories. This in turn determines the direction and the final resolution of my work...a painting that speaks to me.
I am influenced by my rich cultural heritage, extensive travels, and inspired by beauty and colours found in nature. The painting process transports me, and liberates me at the same time. I find myself wanting to break free and indulge my inner child. Not wishing to subscribe to one particular style, the challenge has been to make an unique statement. Trying to capture the transient, I continue on this journey of reawakening and freeing my creative spirit. Wish me joy!
