The Nightwatchmen

Description : There is one eternally constant factor in most suburban street and that is the neighbourhood dogs. They keep an eye on things while we all sleep in our beds. Even as times change and decades pass - highlighted by the different types of architecture - our loyal and faithful companions remain a constant. They are a source of amusement and fun for the kids denoted by the dog's outfits, and a sure and confident alarm when there is rustling in the garden beds. This painting is a joyous reminder of all that our animals do for us. The sides are painted, it's varnished and ready to hang with wire across the back. Signature on the front and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.

Currently live and work on the Gold Coast, Queensland. I am a self-taught artist and have been developing my skills for most of my life. With marriage and 2 children came the development of a small business that focused on reporoductions of my original works. It was a fully in-house handcrafted product, a commercial venture that had good success and eventually needed a lot of outsourcing. I closed it in 2012 mainly because I just wanted to paint not run a fully fledged product based business. In 2013 I began to emerge from the studio by entering local art competitions and was invited in 2015 by Hillier and Skuse Gallery to exhibit my work.

I concentrate mainly on large scale landscapes using imagery drawn from personal experience, childhood memories right through to current observations of everyday life. A large part of my creative expression involves telling a story. My process often starts with asking myself 'where would I like to be today? And what story do I want to tell?' It's usually a wide open space so I can have a look around to see what I want to say. The idea often unfolds as I go, the placing of objects determines the next, guided by an overall mood, story and colour scheme. I can surround myself with things I find interesting and leave out all the clutter that would probably be there in real life. I usually start with the darkest tones moving forward to the lightest so the finished piece is something that is familiar but a the same time a little unusual. Each painting takes many weeks to complete as I construct each landscape from scratch - the perspective, the scale, light souces and shadows. All my works are unique and individual and I do not release prints so the integrity of each piece is preserved.
