Artist Bio: Berit Hampel

I was born in Stendal, an East German town in 1970. My father gave me my first camera in 1981 and sparked the passion for photography. After the falling of the Berlin Wall and with open borders I found myself travelling extensively around the globe and finally settled down in Koroit, a small Irish village in southeast Victoria, Australia in 2004.

With my passion for photography I studied Visual Art and discovered the almost endless possibilities and advantages of Photoshop and digital photo-imaging.

I have produced and exhibited a large body of photographic work. My series based on Alice in Wonderland was shown at Blarney Books & Art in Port Fairy. Other series of works include Fairytales, Ghost Stories, Secrets, a series set in an abandoned east German military hospital, and The Red Dress. These works are often dark, sometimes surreal, understated and all touch on the mysterious.
