Artist Bio: Virginia Stobart

Virginia Stobart

My  work is an investigation into identity and how it shifts and expands through migration. It is with movement that identity shifts, becomes dislocated and fragmented in the process of assimilation. Influenced by both place of origin and place of destination, identity expands in complexity and helps define the present and the future.

Greek Myths were stories passed on to me in my youth and are referenced in my work.

I use paintings, photos, sculptures and natural environments to  film and then reshoot the moving images, reflected or projected onto perspex, glass, mirrors and light to allow the work to move, disintegrate and fragment. I also record natural sounds to further layer the work.

The final work is projected in a way that creates an immersive space for the viewer to reflect on their own stories.
