Jacques Meunier was born in a disadvantaged Parisian suburb, but from a young age was inspired by the huge paintings of battles, despair and light exhibited in the famous museums nearby. At school he already showed that he was a gifted artist, but instead was forced to gain a trade as carpenter joiner. Immigrating to Australia in 1987 he pursued his artistic talents as a theatre set builder, props maker, sculptor and scenic painter. Later, with his wife, he ran a niche market manufacturing company, mould making and supplying precast concrete for decorative urban structures, seats, art elements and monuments. After 13 years they sold their successful business and he is now retired and able to concentrate on his painting and art. Re-commencing his painting interests in 2010 he joined the School of Art in Southport for 2 years. For the past 4 years he has been taking classes and exhibiting with the Royal Qld Art Society located in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast. In 2021 and 2022 he sold his paintings at the prestigious D’Arcy Doyle Art Awards. He is an avid hiker and each weekend hikes on the beautiful coastal beaches or in the Gold Coast hinterland where he finds most of his inspiration. His search is for the light throughout the chaos of nature, darkness in the rainforest, invading outgrowth of palms, vines, branches. Happening upon waterfalls, light slightly piercing through, wind, movement, calmness and serenity. With the sea and beach he especially loves the sky, always dramatic. His future aim is to paint larger canvasses, freer with his brush and a more simple abstractism. His goal for you the viewer is to make you feel like you want to go there just to feel for yourself. |
