Melanie's work is a multi-media mix of installation, photography and painting. She concentrates on the colour or the feeling of moments and loves the times of open resistance that show through. In each photo, video or installation, she presents the individuals that collect, and reflects on the outcry in tangles of objects, twice removed photos, or enlarged views. Often she plays with the concept that the type of society we have, could have been different, and the future is yet to be determined by our actions which can result in alternative futures. Her present exhibition “Shattered” plays with this idea. In her abstract paintings she continues the tradition of the red wedge, the message that only an organised working class can overthrow capitalism. Melanie wants an art of activism and revolutionary optimism. In her installations she uses iPads, iPods wiring, plugs, cameras and wall surfaces, combined with video films capturing different moods of the protests. The vignettes played together lets the viewer focus or drift, on the collective action of protesters. Her focus is on the ‘before’, the prevention. Everyone knows that a war is pending, refugees are in concentration camps, the environment may be further eroded, but collectively those who try their best intellectually and together to organise to prevent disaster are her heroes. Her experience in South Africa from the 60s to the 90s showed her that there is no substitution for the organised working class. Her art embraces how to stop the abuse of refugees, stop thousands dying in needless wars, stop the erosion of working conditions, fight for equality of gender and marriage? If her art does not challenge the 80 people who are richer than the poorest 3.5 billion, something must be done. A residency in Barcelona, Spain put her in touch with part of the European refugee and occupy movement. Melanie has a Master in the History and Philosophy of Science from Melbourne University, and a Master in Contemporary Art from the VCA with First Class Honours. She works at River Studios, part of the Creative Spaces of the City of Melbourne. |
