Artist Bio: Soo Chua |
After surviving an accident, I left my career as an Architect in Singapore and migrated to Melbourne in 2018 looking for a change. The total change in environment has been what I needed to reset my life - with a slower pace of life here, I rekindled my childhood interest in art and found my happy place. I started my art journey with watercolour & acrylic as my primary mediums, but I am always exploring new medium. I discover a new-found love for biro ink and have been experimenting using mix media to push the boundary of my creativity. When it comes to subject matter, I have a fascination for portraitures and enjoy the challenge of drawing faces. Every face has a story to tell, and I am intrigued to convey the emotions & experiences that reside within the facial features and hope to capture the unique essence of the person I portray. I am influenced by the expressive portraitures of old masters such as Paul Gauguin & Henri Matisse and more contempory artists such as Charla Maarschalk. Their ability to capture the essence of their subjects with boldness in terms of colour and brushstroke resonates with me, inspiring me to be expressive & bold in my own art practice. I have participated in several Art Competition since 2022, and the following are some highlights:
I am largely self-taught in art, but have enrolled to study Diploma in Visual Arts since 2023 on a part-time basis for a more structured pathway towards being a professional artist. At the same time, I am teaching Art for Kids at a local Neighbourhood House. |
