Artist Statement
I completed a creative arts diploma at North Sydney Technical College in 1967 not long after finishing school. I completed some other studies after that and then found myself married!
In 1982 I enrolled at Goulburn College of Advanced Education as a Post Graduate student in Creative Arts and received a Teaching Diploma in 1985. In 1982 Goulburn College of Advanced Education was dissolved and faculties were moved to Wagga Wagga, Albury and Bathurst as a degree with the possibility of a Doctorate, but unfortunately I was unable to transfer due to family commitments.
In 1984 the Goulburn Campus was relinquished to the NSW Police Academy. The Arts Faculty were delegated rooms to remain on that campus.
As a continuation of my studies I gained management qualifications, which opened opportunities to work in hotel management and the recruitment and human resource field for various organisations and business enterprises.
I then taught in educational and training institutions teaching both Hotel Management and Business Management and Marketing.
I now work for myself in the educational field as an instructional designer.
While survival necessitated using my qualifications to bring in a regular income, I never lost my passion and enthusiasm for art; having been born into a family of Artists including my Uncle, Justin O’Brien who is a World renowned painter, who’s work hangs in gallery’s across Australia and Europe, including the Vatican.
As I had to spend my working life trying to balance between the two mindsets, one, required to succeed in a business role and the second to see and interpret the world through an artistic eye, it is with great joy I am now able to spend a good deal of my time fulling my passion.
What draws me to a subject and inspires me is line and colour, the expression of the face and body, the vibrancy in all living things –the minute and the expansive.
I find painting both challenging and freeing, as it is so absorbing, the creativity immersing me in another state of consciousness and constantly expanding my capacity to see and see again .
